We’re so grateful to you all for supporting us, liking our pictures, and engaging with our posts. Much more to come in 2018! Incredible portraits in medium format Your most-liked picture of the year is this portrait of Christopher Walken by Rick Wenner “This portrait of the incredible Christopher Walken is one of my all-time favorite images I’ve shot. I was assigned by Observer to go to Walken’s home in Connecticut and was told that I would get an hour of his time, which blew my mind as I am used to only getting a few minutes with celebrities. We had multiple setups ready to go when Chris (he let me call him Chris) was ready and we started with this seamless background set up. We had a nice conversation while I …

Andrei Duman explores extreme environments with medium format

This week, Phase One photographer, Andrei Duman, takes over our Instagram feed. Andrei is an award winning Los Angeles based photographer with a huge thirst for travel, having already visited over 80 countries. He takes his Phase One XF IQ3 100 to unique locations all over the world, including some of the harshest environments possible. Follow his account to see where 2018 takes Andrei. Current planned trips include Bora Bora, the Grand Tetons, South Africa, Romania, JapanCa and Namibia. Below we share some of his takeover and the stories behind the captures. Power Lines (See featured image at the top of this post.) “One of my favorite types of photography is aerial and one of my favorite subjects to capture while being airborne are salt flats. I love the freedom that aerial photography provides, as your subjects and compositions are constantly changing. By a quick switch of your lens mid flight, your focus changes from a panoramic view to an abstract focus, where one can get into the details and create an almost alien-looking environment. …

Timo Lieber shot the Atacama Lithium Mine project using the IQ3 100MP Trichromatic Digital Back on the XF Camera Body and Schneider Kreuznach 35mm LS f/3.5 Blue Ring lens.

The colors of an environmental perspective with Timo Lieber

We spoke with Timo about his latest project, “Atacama Lithium Mine,” and the significance and power of color in his photography. Timo Lieber is an aerial and landscape photographer with an environmental theme in his most recent works. An explorer of the world, he has documented the impact that humans have on our planet. His latest project, “Atacama Lithium Mine,” explores the world’s largest reserves of lithium which are extracted from enormous colorful brine pools at an accelerated rate owing to the move away from fossil fuels. Timo traveled to Chile to document this unique landscape in all its dazzling color, taking Phase One’s new IQ3 100MP Trichromatic Digital Back to test its power to capture color as his eye saw the scene. Timo Lieber speaks about the Atacama Lithium Mine project “I am fascinated with altered landscapes and the impact we humans have on the environment. The Atacama project is focused on an area that is undergoing significant change because of one single metal: lithium. Lithium is a vital ingredient in modern rechargeable batteries …

Aerial photographer, Joshua Jensen-Nagle shooting with the IQ3 100MP Digital Back

Aerial photography: Dreamy scenes from above

Joshua Jensen-Nagle is best known for his aerial photographs of beach or snow-scapes, swarming with colorful life. Joshua spoke with Phase One to tell us about himself and his work, focusing on aerial photography and the equipment he uses to create his distinctive works of art. About Joshua’s style “I have always strived to use photography as a means to create and evoke emotion rather than simply document a reality.  Early in my career, the dreamlike style that I have become known for was very apparent as I photographed works with old Polaroid cameras and expired Polaroid film. Now, using a Phase One, this style is much more subtle, but the softness is preserved through my process, and enhanced through the paper I choose to print on as well as my face-mounting format.” Why beaches and winter landscapes? “Beaches have always been a fascination to me. As a child, I spent my summers in Mantoloking, along the New Jersey Shore staying with my grandfather at his beach house.  Some of my earliest works were beaches …

Aerial photography: Capturing the Arctic’s Transformation

Capturing extraordinary natural phenomena in a resounding way is something many artists and photographers strive to achieve with their work. But capturing a wonder of nature that’s eroding away all too rapidly brings with it a sense of urgency and – in Timo Lieber’s majestic work – poignancy. Timo’s THAW series focuses on the rapidly disappearing Arctic ice sheets, using aerial photography to capture vast icescapes using the XF Camera System with IQ3 100MP Digital Back. Fine art aerial photography “Having travelled to the Arctic numerous times and having seen the rate of change there, I have long wanted to capture the impact of global warming on the Arctic and translate it into striking photographic images. The Greenland ice sheet has been losing mass rapidly over the past few years and it is a major contributor to global sea-level rise – undoubtedly escalated by man’s contribution to global warming. It is currently losing an estimated 380,000,000,000 tonnes of ice annually. Yes, that is a 12-digit figure. “THAW is a collaboration between photography and the scientific work of …

Tim Kemple with the Phase One XF 100MP Camera System

Around the globe with Tim Kemple and the XF 100MP Camera System

Action and sports photographer, Tim Kemple took over our Instagram account showing us his work with the XF 100MP Camera System on a journey around the world. It’s all about authenticity, rawness, passion, and place.  Shooting a dare-devil Tim Kemple shoots dare-devil slackline walker in the Moab Desert, Utah, with the XF 100MP and 28mm Schneider lens.   “This image was shot near the summit of ‘The Rectory’ formation were we climbed about 100m up to get this incredible perspective with the famous ‘Castleton Tower’ in the background. Théo Sanson walking a world record 493 meters between Castleton Tower and the Rectory near Moab, UT. Something I learned this weekend: in order to walk these new long lines, the webbing isn’t rigged as tightly as it was in the past. The ‘slack’ in the system keeps the line from bucking you off as easily. During this walk, Théo was almost 30m below the start and finish points while in the middle of the line.” “Watching Théo Sanson spend what seemed like an hour of complete …
