Drew Altdoerffer on the Schneider Kreuznach blue ring lenses

The Blue Ring Lens Family: The right lens for the right job

Phase One’s Product Manager, Drew Altdoerffer shares his point of view on our wide range of Blue Ring Lenses. Any image, no matter what features or tools the camera may provide, is only as good as the lens that captures it. Sure, there are subjective aesthetic qualities of certain lenses. However, objective qualities like sharpness, resolution, durability and versatility are all essential for professional photographic results. I hope we can all agree on that much. The specific lens you use, how you use it and why you use it, is certainly grounds for a discussion. In the vein of that discussion I have to be honest: my views are completely biased, as I’ve worked for Phase One for nearly 9 years. Nevertheless, even well before that time you could always find me with Phase One in my hands. As a Product Manager I have innumerable opportunities to use and test the Phase One equipment. This is not only taking place in a studio environment but under rather demanding conditions as well. Among other responsibilities here in Copenhagen, I manage the PODAS (Phase One …

Andrea Belluso also known as ‘The Light Shaper’ shares his tips and techniques on lightning using Phase One XF Camera System and the Trichromatic

Andrea Belluso’s Lighting Techniques

Andrea Belluso was introduced to the great fashion photographer, Bardo Fabiani at the age of sixteen. One week later, he quit school and became Fabiani’s assistant. Today, Andrea Belluso is known as “the Light Shaper” by Profoto thanks to his unique expertise in photographic lighting. He is currently based in London and in Stockholm where he has his studio. We arranged a photo shoot with Andrea to see the master in action and hear his story on how he became known as The Light Shaper. What drives you in photography?  “I have been working as a fashion and beauty photographer for many years, almost 35 to be precise, but in the last couple of years I have also been shooting cars for Cadillac and food for Electrolux and Nestlé, as well as shooting a lot of portraits. So, until I started shooting subjects other than fashion and beauty, my photography was driven by elegance, aesthetics and a deep curiosity and interest in fashion and beauty.” “Nowadays, it is driven by the hunger of creating beautiful images for …

Steven Friedman's intriguing landscapes with the XF IQ3 100MP

Steven Friedman shoots intriguing landscapes

What drives a photographer to branch out into landscape photography? We talk to Steven Friedman about how he made the leap into this genre and what inspires him. What is it about landscape photography that intrigues you? “Remote and inaccessible regions are my interest. I want to photograph unique intimate landscape and go to locations that are seldom visited exploring the wilderness. The best thing about landscape photography is the ability to be outside and experience the beauty of nature. Incredible light and colour in the remote landscape can be extraordinary and I never get tired of experiencing it. Just recently, I was standing in an aspen field and the sun rose in the back of the forest – it was quite a thrill to experience the magical colour and light and to photograph it.” What led you to become a landscape photographer? “I was hiking in late autumn in the Gatineau National Park in Canada and found a 35mm film camera at a viewpoint. Knowing someone must be missing it; I called the ranger …

Bastiaan Woudt for Phase One shooting with Phase One XF 100MP Camera System and Schneider Kreuznach 80mm, 28mm, 110mm, and 150mm lenses.

The Meteoric Rise of Bastiaan Woudt

Bastiaan Woudt is a self-trained photographer, developing his craft and signature style through immersion in the history of photography, and studying the masters in museums and fairs. By immersing himself in the world of photobooks and exhibitions, Bastiaan developed from his early Pictorialist style into something wholly more abstract yet sharp, and with a strong focus on detail. His portraits and nudes transform the subject from mere humans into unreal (and ideal), giving a contemporary twist to the classical form. Origin and inspiration “I am always looking for things that draw my attention. People, objects, landscapes. I guess I’m not one kind of photographer. When my eldest son was born, I bought my first ‘real’ camera. From there my interest in the medium exploded and resulted in a career in photography. Much later I found out that in primary school, one of my first essays was on photography.” “My inspiration comes from many forms of art, but in particular, the old masters of photography. Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Man Ray, Bill Brandt, all amazing minds …

Fashion photographer, Giampaolo Sgura shooting with the XF Camera System and the Schneider Kreuznach 120mm lens

Fashion photography with Giampaolo Sgura

Fashion photographer, Giampaolo Sgura shoots for big names in the fashion world, including Vogue and GQ magazine. But it wasn’t always so. Coming from an agricultural background, he studied architecture, although he always knew that his heart was in fashion. We talk to him about how he made the leap into the fashion world and what inspires him. Driven by origins “I’ve learned a lot from my father, whose background is in agriculture. It’s in the way I work with people, the way I relate to them, my way of respecting everybody on set. I feel lucky to have such a great job. My father was always smiling even when his machines were stuck or broken. He’d be happy to fix it and make sure he was not losing days of work in his field and come back home to us proud of his day at work. Coming from this background you appreciate life, sun and respect.” From architecture to fashion “I studied architecture in Milan and Berlin but during those five years I have …

Bella Kotak shooting with the Phase One XF 100MP Camera System

The Enchanted Women of Bella Kotak

Bella Kotak is a fine art and fashion photographer. With her latest shoots, she whisks us into her feminine fairy-tale world bursting with blossoming flowers, captured with the Phase One XF 100MP Camera System. Prepare to be awed by the glistening beauty and magic she creates of nature and womanhood as Bella speaks with us about her work, inspiration, and the tools she uses to make her images. Where does your inspiration come from and what drives you to create these type of scenes?  “The first shoot, Winter’s Wildflower, tells a story of a queen-like character on a journey. I created the floral cape that she wears by using up of all the leftover flowers that I had been hoarding from the last year (and there were plenty!). I love playing with juxtaposing themes and seeing flowers and foliage in the middle of winter isn’t a normal sight which is why I thought it would make an interesting picture. Through this piece I wanted to say goodbye to 2016 and invite the viewer to join …

Phase One’s PODAS instructor, Drew Altdoeffer Instagram takeover with Phase One XF IQ3 100MP

PODAS Photography Workshop with Drew Altdoerffer

Our very own PODAS instructor, Drew Altdoeffer, took over our Instagram account with some of his pictures from some of his PODAS photography workshops. At the workshops he’s providing you with a first-class education, using the world’s best equipment in breathtaking locations. Giant Icebergs “When you’re fortunate enough to have equipment like the XF IQ3 100MP and the Schneider Kreuznach 35mm LS f/3.5 Blue Ring with you for a landscape shoot, the last thing you would think about doing is hanging off the side of a zodiac in sub-zero waters. But sometimes the last thing you would think about doing is the only thing you can do to get the shot.” “These giant icebergs were just begging to be photographed from the water’s surface so I ignored the sensible part of my consciousness and got as close to the water as I could. With the Waistlevel Finder on the XF IQ3 100MP it was a breeze to get the composition I needed and with the 35mm lens providing me astounding detail and contrast, these ship-sized ice cubes …
